Terms & Conditions

These terms cover your use of Scan2Return (scan2return.duckdns.org). By registering a key ring or scanning a QR code you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

1. What the service is

We print nothing and we hold nothing physical. We give you a QR code that points at a page showing the contact details you choose, and we email you when that page is opened. We are a messaging service between two strangers, and nothing more. We do not find, collect, store, ship or return lost items, and we are not a party to anything agreed between the owner and the finder.

2. No guarantee your keys will come back

The service is free, and it is provided as it is. A scan notification means that somebody opened your page. It does not mean your keys have been found, that the person is honest, or that you will get anything back. Whether a finder contacts you, and what happens next, is entirely outside our control.

3. If you register a key ring (owner)

• Give true and current details, and only contact details you are entitled to publish. The name, phone number, email address, Telegram username and anything else in your listing will be shown to anyone who scans your QR code.
• Keep your manage link private. It is the only key to your listing, and anyone holding it can read and change everything in it.
• Do not put anyone else's personal details in your listing without their permission, and do not use the free-text fields for anything unlawful, defamatory, obscene or misleading.
• Do not attach your QR code to property that is not yours to label.

4. If you scan a QR code (finder)

• Use the contact details you are shown only to return the item to its owner.
• Do not use them for marketing, for adding the owner to any list, for harassment, or for any other purpose. This is a condition of seeing them: in Hong Kong, using personal data obtained this way for direct marketing is an offence.
• Do not pass the details on to anyone else.
• Do not pretend to have found something you have not, and do not use the service to contact people who have not lost anything.

5. Rewards

If an owner advertises a reward, that is an arrangement between the owner and the finder alone. We set no reward, we hold no money, we verify nothing, and we cannot enforce any promise either way. Pay nothing before an item is actually returned to you, and never send money, bank details or codes to someone you have not verified.

6. Acceptable use

Do not: register key rings you do not own or administer; generate QR codes in bulk or by automated means; scrape the site or harvest contact details; probe, scan or attempt to access listings, tokens or accounts that are not yours; send automated, bulk or fraudulent requests; or do anything that interferes with the service or with other people's use of it.

7. Our rights

We may refuse, suspend, deactivate or delete any listing, and block any request, that we reasonably believe breaks these terms or the law, or that threatens the service. The service is free and we may change, limit or withdraw it, in whole or in part, at any time.

8. Your content and ours

Your listing details stay yours. You give us permission to store, copy and show them to the extent needed to run the service, which means showing them to finders and emailing them to you. The QR codes, the site, its design and its code remain ours. Please do not copy or republish them as your own.

9. Liability

The service is provided without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost, stolen or unrecovered property; for anything a finder does or fails to do; for the accuracy of anything a finder shares (including shared location); for any reward you offer or fail to receive; or for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or loss of data, however it arises. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, nothing in these terms excludes it. Our total liability, where it exists, is limited to HK$500.

10. End of service

You may stop using the service whenever you like; you can deactivate your key ring at once from your manage page, and ask us to delete it and its scan history. We may suspend or close access if these terms are broken.

11. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the date at the top of the page shows the current version, and continuing to use the service means you accept it. These terms are governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the Hong Kong courts have exclusive jurisdiction.
